Project 3: Light
Architectural Design II- ARC 257
The purpose of this project is to design a non-denominational chapel for Farmingdale State College. The chapel is intended to serve as a calm and welcoming environment where individuals of all faiths can gather for worship, prayer, and reflection. The project focuses on using light creatively and intentionally to shape the atmosphere of the space. Through thoughtful control of natural and artificial lighting, the design aims to create a functional, peaceful, and visually inspiring environment that encourages spiritual connection.

Light Background Research
Louis I. Khan- Kimbell Museum

An interior view of Kimbell Art Museum. It is known for its use of natural light in the form of skylights. The building was intended to balance beauty, structure, and function while creating a calm atmosphere for reflection and appreciation of art. Through its vaulted ceilings, skylights, and thoughtful material choices, the museum demonstrates how architecture and light can work together to shape human experience.

Reflectors hanging from the skylights reflect the light onto the concrete vault above in these direction. It's illuminating the ceiling rather than the floor and artwork below.

This is a closer look at the reflectors themselves.
Site Selection

I thought this location was ideal for the church for a few reasons. Since there are no nearby buildings blocking the sunlight, the space can benefit from plenty of natural light, helping create a bright and welcoming atmosphere. In addition, the church is placed slightly away from the academic buildings, which gives the area a calmer and more peaceful feeling, making it suitable for reflection and prayer.
